Page 1 of 19 This tutorial will explain how to use Maya polygons to create dragon.
Dragon will be exported in Zbush for further refining, so mesh will be very basic. However mesh must be made from quads since Zbrush can’t handle n-sided polys. I don’t like triangles either since they don’t deform very well.
In this tutorial I’m going to use extrude, split faces, insert edge loop tool so it’s good to do Maya polygonal modeling lessons from help (I think there’s still modeling the hammer lesson, it’s good)
Another very important thing that I prefer is SHIFT+RMB marking menu. It gives you all polygon commands based on selection. Get used to it, it’s better than shelf. Also CTRL+RMB gives
So back to dragon. Use Create Polygon Tool (just hold SHIFT+LMB and you get primitive creation marking menu). Just click to create points. If you mess the one just press insert to change position or press delete to delete it and draw it again. So make the overall shape from side view.
Then use Split Polygon Tool. Just drag on the edge until tool snaps to vertex, and then connect it with corresponding vertex on the other side.
And you shall get something like this
Then use Split Polygon Tool again, to cut the line along body. You can also use Insert Edge Loop Tool but I like split polygon more since I have more control over my mesh.
Split again near the bottom.
Ideally before launching everything to your web page hosting, you should have an online backup. This should be in addition to the data recovery hardware. This is a golden rule of search engine optimization. Although cheap web hosting seldom offers or boasts of the best image hosting, but a basic web design is carried off just as well.
Select All faces
Use Extrude Tool and extrude them a bit. I will call this just extrude from now.
If you tumble camera on the other side, you can see faces in the back. Delete them since that will be the middle of dragon’s body.
